Creating 2D Shapes

Today we made 2D shapes using pipe cleaners and straws. One of our math coaches suggested this activity. I love that it was hands on and that students could actually touch and count the sides of each shape as they were creating them!

This was kind of really hard for some kids! Be ready to give a lot of support to students if you decide to do this. Luckily I have an instructional aide in my classroom during math and a few students who were good helpers so that helped.

We just worked on triangles and squares today. Tomorrow we will do a rectangle and rhombus using toothpicks and marshmallows.
