Building Vocabulary

We practiced different sentences using vocabulary from Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Farm.

The sentence stems we used were:
  • I think ____.
  • I like ____.
  • This reminds me of ____.
  • This makes me think about ____.
The first day I read part of the book and had students make predictions about the story using the sentence stem "I think ___."

I stopped when you see the animals go from sad to happy. Students had to predict why the animals were happy.

Most of the students said "I think the animals are happy because they are back on the farm." or "I think the animals are happy because they see Mrs. Wishy-Washy."

We finished the story the next day and students wrote about what they liked.

I let students chose between the last two sentence stems. It reminded some students about not liking baths. It made one student think about going to the zoo. It reminded others of a time when they went to a farm. They made a lot of good connections to the text.
